Cups series ANov 2024
The art of repetition, after spending so long having fun experimenting with different clay bodies, and playing with different forms, I wanted to test myself by creating a series of simple handled mugs, all the same size and shape. When you’re used to throwing for fun, throwing with precision can feel a little daunting. To make things even more challenging, I decided to pull the handles by hand. Calculating, throwing, and measuring turned out to be easier than expected, but pulling uniform handles... that isn’t for the faint of heart.
I used a clay body with more grog than what I’m used to, which was a little rough on the hands while throwing, but it made attaching the handles much easier. I’ve been playing around with slips lately, so I tried coating the exterior of the cup with porcelain slip. I was aiming to experiment with the texture, but it didn’t quite turn out as expected.. but it help to create a lovely vibrant white base for the matt white glaze to shine on.
